Project Description

Beans Bridge was a multiple span concrete structure built by the US Navy Seabees in the early 1960s to support a 36-inch water main pipeline over the Namo River in central Guam. The pipeline is the main water source for Naval Base Guam and surrounding rural area. The Beans Bridge Replacement Design-Build project posed challenges in both design and construction. The greatest challenges were to maintain the water supply during construction and minimize impact to the wetlands. Equally demanding was the site access as the river is located in a steep ravine with limited work area. To address the first challenge, the Design-Build team offset the replacement bridge by 10 feet from the existing pipeline structure. While this created the challenge of connecting to the existing pipeline with complicated ball/expansion fittings to deal with the seismic requirements, it resulted in a very limited eight-hour outage to make the final connections.
