Project Description
Part of a regional strategy for improving access across the Mississippi River in the Quad Cities, the I-74 Mississippi River Bridge project includes the replacement of the old I-74 over the Mississippi River. Lunda constructed two basket-handle true arches using a tower and stay system that is typically reserved for parallel arches to avoid obstructions to the busy navigational channel of the Mississippi River. The 800-foot basket handle arches are the longest basket handle true arches erected in the United States and one of very few erected in place. The bridge is more than twice as wide as the old bridge and includes a multi-use path on the bridge that will connect to paths in Bettendorf and Moline. The project also features roadway and aesthetic lighting on and underneath the bridge structures, and a scenic overlook with connections to added pedestrian and bike paths. The bridge is expected to carry 100,000 vehicles per day by the year 2035.
