The State Correctional Institute at Somerset is a 13-building, 1,000-cell correctional facility. The complex includes precast modular prison cells consisting of six 128-cell medium security housing units, a 96-cell maximum security housing unit, a 48-cell minimum security housing unit, and a pre-release center. Two single-story pre-engineered support buildings are 500 feet long and contain health services, dietary services, gymnasium, vocational training, a maintenance shop, warehousing and industries. The 60-acre site is completely enclosed with a double, 14-foot-high perimeter fence. The site required approximately 900,000 cubic yards of material to be excavated.
