Project Description

This historic restoration in Washington D.C. was one of 17 projects completed by Perini Management Services, Inc. for the National Park Service under a Multiple Award Task Order Contract (MATOC) for agencies within the Department of Interior. The Carter G. Woodson Home is a National Historic Site that commemorates a prominent African American scholar who is credited with initiating Black History Month. The site consists of three adjoining townhouses, dating back to the 1870s, that were in very deteriorated condition, and in need of both interior and exterior structural repairs. The scope of this first phase of restoration included the complete structural stabilization of all three buildings. The work included timber framing, and concrete slabs. As well as temporary shoring, continuous underpinning and upgraded foundations for all three buildings. PMSI also disassembled and rebuilt the three rear additions using restored historic brick. All of the buildings required a combination of renewed and historic masonry repair, restoration of historic windows and doors, and roofing. Both the interior and exterior of the Carter Woodson townhouse were completely renovated, taking care to remove and restore as much of the original historic finishes (brick, cornices, windows, doors, etc.) as possible. The other two townhouse interiors will be restored by NPS at a later date.
