Project Description

The Queens Tunnels were designed to bring Long Island Railroad (LIRR) trains into a new station located below Grand Central Terminal. The work included four 19.5-foot diameter tunnels with a combined length of 10,500 feet. Two soft ground slurry shields were used to construct the tunnels. The tunnels were lined with precast concrete segments. Also constructed were three shafts that include cross passages for emergency access and ventilation.
